چکیده

In this paper a comparison between two of the most signiicant and common tools for distributed computing, PVM and Linda, is carried out. These tools may be used to program a cluster of workstations as well as several commercial multiprocessors and multicomputers and are based upon two completely diierent computational paradigms: message-passing (PVM) and the shared tuple space (Linda). The paper compares the expressive power and function-alities of PVM and Linda for describing process creation and common cooperation needs. A comparison of the performances obtained on a network of SUN sparc2 workstations running two applications is furthermore presented.

PT-PVM : A Portable Platform for Multithreaded Coordination Languages

This paper describes a portable message passing and process management platform for multithreaded applications. PT-PVM is based on the PVM system and provides message passing and process management facilities at the thread level for a cluster of workstations running the UNIX operating system without changing the PVM system. Moreover PT-PVM introduces advanced programming abstractions like gener...

Efficiency Evaluation of Pvm 2.x, Pvm 3.x, P4, Express and Linda on a Workstation Cluster Using the Nas Parallel Benchmarks

When developing programs for a network of workstations, a tedious and time consuming task consists of handling the communication and synchronization in a correct and eecient way. Correct means in this context, that it is guaranteed, that each process running on a particular machine will receive the appropriate data and that the program will not deadlock. With the term eecient we mean a minimum ...

Express versus PVM: A performance

Due to the increasing popularity of networked clusters of workstations and the need for portability across various parallel and distributed platforms, a number of programming environments have been proposed to develop parallel programs. Express and PVM are two such commonly used environments that are available on most commercial parallel computers as well as a variety of clusters of workstation...

Programming Environments for Parallel Computing: A Comparison of CPS, Linda, P4, PVM, POSYBL, and TCGMS

In this paper, six portable parallel programming environments are compared. For each environment, communication bandwidths are reported for simple 2 node and 4 node benchmarks. Reproducibility was a top priority , so these tests were run on an isolated ethernet network of identical SPARCstation 1 workstations. Earlier reports of this work omitted opinions reached during the benchmarking about t...
